As a good friend of the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, filmmaker Richard Lowenstein gets amazing, unprecedented access to home movies, personal recordings of Hutchence's thoughts when he was alive, and interviews with close friends and family of Hutchence.
The result is a wonderful and fitting tribute to a rock star whose music and charisma had a huge impact on his generation.
People such as lover Kylie Minogue and manager Martha Troup speak in depth about what Hutchence was really like, and what drove him.
The consensus is that he was an artist at heart - shy as a boy but a showman as an adult, who write his own lyrics and melodies and wanted to be famous, but who like so many before him, suffered the downsides of fame.
Hutchence loved his parents, but the documentary shows how they had deep flaws, for which he forgave them eventually.
The part I don't quite understand is about Hutchence's relationship with Paula Yates, and the circumstances that led to Hutchence's death in a Sydney hotel.
There were some very messy circumstances, and I'm not sure this doco provides many insights, aside from suggesting that Hutchence was down because he agonised over the prospect of breaking up Yates and Bob Geldof, and thereby hurting their three daughters, which may have reminded Hutchence of the pain of his own parents' split.
I don't know about that. But maybe we'll never know, because Yates and Hutchence are no longer with us.
Hutchence and Yates were, as someone points out, bad influences on one another.
It's so sad, in any case, that Hutchence had such a terrible fall from his golden early years.

Beautifully made. The team behind this doc has included so much stunning footage shot by Michael himself, and by those around him, as well as file footage of the time. They've compiled a work of art and a realistic portrait of Hutchence's life. There is so much we learn in this about his final few dramatic and tumultuous years. There are contemporary interviews included, but no video / talking heads of them speaking now. This was the right choice by the filmmakers. It's simply contextual narration over the footage of the time. It was painstakingly edited/produced, and one of the best documents on a musical personality I've seen in decades. Highly recommend.

Great musician with a brilliant vocal. Pretty nice and genuine guy a must say, down to earth. Bubbly and funny, enjoying the time of his life. Till the accident in Denmark, had a big influence on him and his personality, such a shame. Poor thing. Then Paula Yates come to his life and all went somewhere on the Sahara with plenty dunes too cross, but it's such long way to reach The media push him far away from The Oasis. Fiction generally is a narrative form, in any medium, consisting of people, events, or places that are imaginary —in other words, not based strictly on history or fact. [1] 2] 3] It also commonly refers, more narrowly, to written narratives in prose and often specifically novels. [4] In film, it generally corresponds to narrative film in opposition to documentary. Overview [ edit] In its most narrow usage, fiction refers to novels, but it may also denote any " literary narrative" see literary fiction. 5] 6] including novels, novellas, and short stories. More broadly, fiction has come to encompass storytelling with imaginary elements in any format, including writings, audio recordings, live theatrical performances, comics, animated or live-action films, television programs, games (most notably, role-playing and video games) and so on. A work of fiction implies the inventive construction of an imaginary world and, most commonly, its fictionality is publicly acknowledged, so its audience typically expects it to deviate in some ways from the real world rather than presenting only characters who are actual people or descriptions that are factually true. [7] Fiction is generally understood as not adhering precisely to the real world, which also opens it up to various interpretations. [8] Characters and events within a fictional work may even be set in their own context entirely separate from the known universe: an independent fictional universe. In contrast to fiction is its traditional opposite: non-fiction, in which the creator assumes responsibility for presenting only the historical and factual truth. Despite the usual distinction between fiction and non-fiction, some fiction creators certainly attempt to make their audience believe the work is non-fiction or otherwise blur the boundary, often through forms of experimental fiction (including some postmodern fiction and autofiction) 9] or even through deliberate literary fraud. [10] Formats [ edit] Traditionally, fiction includes novels, short stories, fables, legends, myths, fairy tales, epic and narrative poetry, plays (including operas, musicals, dramas, puppet plays, and various kinds of theatrical dances. However, fiction may also encompass comic books, and many animated cartoons, stop motions, anime, manga, films, video games, radio programs, television programs ( comedies and dramas) etc. The Internet has had a major impact on the creation and distribution of fiction, calling into question the feasibility of copyright as a means to ensure royalties are paid to copyright holders. [11] Also, digital libraries such as Project Gutenberg make public domain texts more readily available. The combination of inexpensive home computers, the Internet and the creativity of its users has also led to new forms of fiction, such as interactive computer games or computer-generated comics. Countless forums for fan fiction can be found online, where loyal followers of specific fictional realms create and distribute derivative stories. The Internet is also used for the development of blog fiction, where a story is delivered through a blog either as flash fiction or serial blog, and collaborative fiction, where a story is written sequentially by different authors, or the entire text can be revised by anyone using a wiki. Types of literary fiction in prose are distinguished by relative length and include: 12] Short story: the boundary between a long short story and a novella is vague. [13] Novella, Joseph Conrad 's Heart of Darkness (1899) is an example of a novella. [14] Novel Genre fiction [ edit] Fiction is commonly broken down into a variety of genres: subsets of fiction, each differentiated by a particular unifying tone or style; set of narrative techniques, archetypes, or other tropes; media content; or other popularly defined criterion. Science fiction, for example, predicts or supposes technologies that are not realities at the time of the work's creation: Jules Verne 's novel From the Earth to the Moon was published in 1865 and only in 1969 did astronaut Neil Armstrong first land on the moon. Historical fiction places imaginary characters into real historical events. In the early historical novel Waverley, Sir Walter Scott 's fictional character Edward Waverley meets a figure from history, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and takes part in the Battle of Prestonpans. Some works of fiction are slightly or greatly re-imagined based on some originally true story, or a reconstructed biography. [15] Often, even when the fictional story is based on fact, there may be additions and subtractions from the true story to make it more interesting. An example is Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, a series of short stories about the Vietnam War. Fictional works that explicitly involve supernatural, magical, or scientifically impossible elements are often classified under the genre of fantasy, including Lewis Carroll 's Alice In Wonderland, J. K. Rowling 's Harry Potter series, and J. R. Tolkien 's The Lord of the Rings. Creators of fantasy sometimes introduce imaginary creatures and beings such as dragons and fairies. [3] Literary fiction [ edit] Literary fiction is a term used in the book-trade to distinguish novels that are regarded as having literary merit, from most commercial or "genre" fiction. Neal Stephenson has suggested that while any definition will be simplistic there is today a general cultural difference between literary and genre fiction. On the one hand literary authors nowadays are frequently supported by patronage, with employment at a university or a similar institution, and with the continuation of such positions determined not by book sales but by critical acclaim by other established literary authors and critics. On the other hand, he suggests, genre fiction writers tend to support themselves by book sales. [16] However, in an interview, John Updike lamented that "the category of 'literary fiction' has sprung up recently to torment people like me who just set out to write books, and if anybody wanted to read them, terrific, the more the merrier. I'm a genre writer of a sort. I write literary fiction, which is like spy fiction or chick lit. 17] Likewise, on The Charlie Rose Show, he argued that this term, when applied to his work, greatly limited him and his expectations of what might come of his writing, so he does not really like it. He suggested that all his works are literary, simply because "they are written in words. 18] Literary fiction often involves social commentary, political criticism, or reflection on the human condition. [19] In general it focuses on "introspective, in-depth character studies" of "interesting, complex and developed" characters. [19] 20] This contrasts with genre fiction where plot is the central concern. [21] Usually in literary fiction the focus is on the "inner story" of the characters who drive the plot, with detailed motivations to elicit "emotional involvement" in the reader. [22] 23] The style of literary fiction is often described as "elegantly written, lyrical, and. layered. 24] The tone of literary fiction can be darker than genre fiction, 25] while the pacing of literary fiction may be slower than popular fiction. [25] As Terrence Rafferty notes, literary fiction, by its nature, allows itself to dawdle, to linger on stray beauties even at the risk of losing its way. 26] Realism [ edit] Realistic fiction typically involves a story whose basic setting (time and location in the world) is real and whose events could feasibly happen in a real-world setting; non-realistic fiction involves a story where the opposite is the case, often being set in an entirely imaginary universe, an alternative history of the world other than that currently understood as true, or some other non-existent location or time-period, sometimes even presenting impossible technology or a defiance of the currently understood laws of nature. However, all types of fiction arguably invite their audience to explore real ideas, issues, or possibilities in an otherwise imaginary setting, or using what is understood about reality to mentally construct something similar to reality, though still distinct from it. [note 1] note 2] In terms of the traditional separation between fiction and non-fiction, the lines are now commonly understood as blurred, showing more overlap than mutual exclusion. Even fiction usually has elements of, or grounding in, truth. The distinction between the two may be best defined from the perspective of the audience, according to whom a work is regarded as non-fiction if its people, places, and events are all historically or factually real, while a work is regarded as fiction if it deviates from reality in any of those areas. The distinction between fiction and non-fiction is further obscured by an understanding, on the one hand, that the truth can be presented through imaginary channels and constructions, while, on the other hand, imagination can just as well bring about significant conclusions about truth and reality. citation needed] Literary critic James Wood, argues that "fiction is both artifice and verisimilitude. meaning that it requires both creative invention as well as some acceptable degree of believability, 29] a notion often encapsulated in poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's term: willing suspension of disbelief. Also, infinite fictional possibilities themselves signal the impossibility of fully knowing reality, provocatively demonstrating that there is no criterion to measure constructs of reality. [30] See also [ edit] Cartoonist Character (arts) Fiction writing Pseudohistory Notes [ edit] As philosopher Stacie Friend explains, in reading we take works of fiction, like works of non-fiction, to be about the real world—even if they invite us to imagine the world to be different from how it actually is. [Thus] imagining a storyworld does not mean directing one's imagining toward something other than the real world; it is instead a mental activity that involves constructing a complex representation of what a story portrays. 27] The research of Weisberg and Goodstein (2009) revealed that, despite not being specifically informed that, say, the fictional character Sherlock Holmes, had two legs, their subjects "consistently assumed that some real-world facts obtained in fiction, although they were sensitive to the kind of fact and the realism of the story. 28] References [ edit. fiction. True Fiction  is a new indie horror thriller that just premiered at the Fantaspoa 2019 film festival in Brasil. Its a slow-burner that ultimately delivers big time! Read more in our True Fiction review here. True Fiction  is a horror thriller with a deliciously gritty ending. The movie is a low-budget production and it just had its world premiere at the Fantaspoa 2019 film festival in Brasil. The movie does start out a bit slow and I would even say that its too slow for my liking. However, and this is important, it really delivers once we get into the last act. I mean wow! Read more about this new indie horror thriller in our review of  True Fiction  review below. The slow burn of  True Fiction My only issue with  True Fiction  was the fact that I wanted to know the main character better. Or rather, I felt like I needed to know her  more before getting into the actual main plot. I get that it is actually a part of the plot that we dont know too much about her, but it just would have helped me engage more with the story. Thats probably also why I love Korean movies so much; They might run long and be slow-burners, but much of the runtime tend to be used introducing characters in depth. While we dont get to know much about the characters at first, it does get  a lot better as the story progresses. In all the right ways! Sara Garcia is the breakout star! The main character Avery Malone is played perfectly by Sara Garcia. At first, I felt like she was a bit on the boring side, but thats all part of the ruse. Avery Malone is one hell of a badass once Sara Garcia really gets into it and shows us the many sides of this character. If you watched  Reign you might know Sara Garcia as Keira on that series. Also, she was in the war drama series  X Company. Basically, you should watch  True Fiction to experience Sara Garcia evolve the character as Avery Malone. By the time we got to the final act, I was completely on board with both the plot and character. In fact, to me, the final act is at a big 4 out of 5 stars. The beginning was simply too slow and weak for me to keep this rating overall for the movie. Still, a good ending can lift the overall value so I would place it at 3½ stars (if we gave half stars. Watch True Fiction when you get the chance! Braden Croft is the writer and director of  True Fiction and this is only his third film. However, other than working as a director on his own projects, he was also First Assistant Director on  What Keeps You Alive which I loved. You might also like: Our review of the brilliant little indie  What Keeps You Alive  here > Also,  True Fiction is at least as bloody and violent towards the end as  What Keeps You Alive was. Personally, I needed to know the main character better in order for the movie to resonate with me more. However, its one hell of a ride and the ending is wild! Bottom-line: If youre not crazy about slow-burner then you might suffer a bit at first, but it will all be worth it in the end. True Fiction premiered at Fantaspoa 2019 in Brasil on May 24, 2019. Details Director: Braden Croft Cast: Sara Garcia, John Cassini, genre icon Julian Richings, and Julian Black Antelope. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors. Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure! Latest posts by Karina "ScreamQueen" Adelgaard ( see all.

We meet Lee Kyung-Seok, an aspiring senator on the campaign trail for mayor supported by his father in law, on the way to his wifes cottage with his mistress. An accident introduces them to a strange young man who claims to be the caretaker of the grounds and invites them for a dinner that over the course of a few hours, will have enormous consequences for all sat around the camp fire. First timer Kim Jin-Mook writes and directs a slow burning thriller, that, like a rolling stone, gathers more and more pace as the film unfolds. A story-line with multiple twists that at first may seem a little tedious, is purely appetiser for a fairly well executed final act. Technically, the film performs quite well, with excellent use of nighttime scenery to build the tension. The music was for the most part, a little cheesy with a 70s police cop show vibe, but once again the third act came through with some great brooding synth work. Oh Man-Seok (‘A Brand New Life) plays our mayoral candidate supported by his mistress Lee Na-Ra (‘Forgotten) and our antagonist Ji Hyun-Woo (‘Trot Lovers. Ji Hyun-Woo is clearly the stand out, as the smiling Kim taking us on whatever journey he wants to tell to suit his story. I guess my only real concern was that, although the culminating final twists and scenes unravelled in a hugely entertainment way, regardless of the outcome you never really care for any of the characters. They are all bad people doing bad things, so without having empathy for anyone, when someone is defeated, its by someone equally deserving of their comeuppance. Im not saying by any means you need to have likeable characters for a film to have any merit. Its just, I found myself hoping everyone would be punished, but in a thriller of this style there will always be some sort of winner, alive or dead. I think for a first time film, it is an excellent effort but maybe the character development needed to do delve a little deeper. Irrespective I look forward to his what his sophomore film has in store for us. Advertisement.

Hollywood, instead of "rebooting" a franchise for the umpteenth time, adapting another television or Broadway show into a movie, or launching another comic book character, I have your next property right here. Lee Goldberg's newest novel, True Fiction already reads like a movie, combining a little bit of television shows like Castle with movies like the Jack Reacher series. It's a quick read, with appealing characters and a frenetic pace. Ian Ludlow is an author of a 4. Lee Goldberg's newest novel, True Fiction already reads like a movie, combining a little bit of television shows like Castle with movies like the Jack Reacher series. Ian Ludlow is an author of a best-selling series of thrillers featuring Clint Straker, a James Bond-esque action hero who always knows how to save the day—and perhaps the world—and, as you might imagine, is quite popular with women all over the globe. But as much as he'd like to think there are lots of similarities with his character, no one would mistake Ludlow for Clint Straker. "What they saw was a guy on the dark side of thirty with the soft body of someone whose idea of exercise was walking into McDonald's rather than using the drive-through. When a passenger plane crashes into a busy Waikiki hotel, Ludlow is horrified, because he knows this wasn't just some tragic accident, and he knows who is behind it. He knows because several years ago, he was part of a group of thriller writers tasked by the CIA to dream up the unlikeliest of terror scenarios, ostensibly to help the agency prepare for any potential disaster. During that group meeting, Ludlow was the one who dreamed up how something like this could happen. After he puts together some facts about recent occurrences in his life, he realizes his life is in danger. With Margo, the woman hired to escort him to a few local book signings, as his only companion, Ludlow must figure out how to stay one step ahead of the shadowy political conspiracy that needs him to disappear. It's not too long before the pair realizes that to survive, Ludlow needs to think like his famous character—which shouldn't be too hard, since he created him, right? But the enemy they face has more resources at their disposal, and they'll stop at nothing to get rid of these dangerous nuisances. This is a crazy book—even though so much of the action at first glance seems far-fetched, given what's been going on in our world lately, it's scary to think that at least some of this—especially the use of technology to track Ludlow and Margo's escape attempts—might actually be possible. Sure, you probably know how things will resolve themselves, but Goldberg does a great job getting you hooked on the plot from the get-go, and you can't wait to see where the story will go. I didn't realize how prolific a writer Goldberg is—he's written more than 30 books, including 15 Monk mysteries. This was a terrific introduction to his storytelling talent, and I practically devoured this book. It was great to read a book that felt like a movie, and didn't let up on the action and suspense until the end. Hope to see this on the big screen someday, and I hope there's another Ludlow book on the horizon! See all of my reviews at, or check out my list of the best books I read in 2017 at... Apr 19, 2018 James Thane Lee Goldberg is a very funny guy. He's also a prolific writer with something on the order of five dozen books to his credit, along with a host of television shows for which he has written scripts, and he's brought all of that experience to bear on his newest book, True Fiction, which is a terrific read. The protagonist, Ian Ludlow, is, like Goldberg, a very successful writer. Ludlow has build a career around a series of novels featuring Clint Straker, an action hero in the mold of Jack Reacher or Lee Goldberg is a very funny guy. Ludlow has build a career around a series of novels featuring Clint Straker, an action hero in the mold of Jack Reacher or James Bond. Clint is an incredibly handsome, tough guy who thinks quickly on his feet and who has multiple ways of disposing of the villains who challenge him, no matter how great their numbers. And as scores of women can attest, he's also fantastic in bed. Ludlow is nothing like his hero at all. He's an insecure schlub who exists largely on junk food and who hasn't had a meaningful relationship with a woman in ages. He's terribly out of shape and couldn't fight his way out of the proverbial wet paper bag. (He's obviously unlike his creator in this respect in that, as anyone can tell from his author photo, Mr. Goldberg is something of an international sex symbol. As the book opens, Ludlow is having trouble getting traction on his new book when someone remotely takes control of a passenger plane and crashes it into a hotel on Waikiki Beach. Watching the news, Ludlow is horrified because several years earlier, in an effort to stay a step ahead of the terrorist threat to America, the CIA had gathered together a group of thriller writers and asked them to dream up scenarios that bad guys might use to attack the U. S. Ludlow recognizes this plan as his very own and then discovers that all of the other writers who were at the meeting have had fatal "accidents" within the last few months. A few weeks ago, Ludlow himself narrowly escaped death when his house blew up. Investigators determined that the explosion was an accident, but Ludlow suddenly realizes that it was no accident at all. Out of nowhere, he's been catapulted into a scenario straight out of one of his own novels. When the realization hits him, Ludlow is in Seattle on a book tour, accompanied by a feisty young dog sitter named Margo who doubles as a book tour escort. Ludlow and Margo must go on the run in a desperate effort to stay one step ahead of the villains who are in hot pursuit and who are using every modern technological tool to track them down and kill them. Defeating these guys would all be in a day's work for Clint Straker, but sadly, Ian Ludlow is no Clint Straker- or is he? If he and Margo are going to survive, Ludlow will have to dig deep and plot a new scenario in which a thriller writer, rather than his superhero, can rise and save the day. This is a hugely entertaining romp and a fairly quick read. The book is laugh-out-loud funny and is a great sendup of the thriller genre. Given his experience in television, Goldberg knows how to strip a scene down to its essence and how to keep the action moving at a breakneck pace. Ludlow and Margo are very appealing characters and I loved spending an evening in their company. I'm already looking forward to the second installment in this series... Jun 21, 2018 Matt liked it Needing a quick read, I turned to this series debut by Lee Goldberg, about which I have heard many good things. When an airplane crashes in Hawaii not long after take-off, the news outlets begin streaming coverage and countless people gasp in horror. However, thriller writer Ian Ludlow is not one of them. Hiding in his Seattle hotel while on a book tour, Ludlow knows that with this event, his life is in imminent danger. Coaxed out of hiding by his author escort, Margo French, Ludlow tells of how Needing a quick read, I turned to this series debut by Lee Goldberg, about which I have heard many good things. Coaxed out of hiding by his author escort, Margo French, Ludlow tells of how the CIA is trying to kill him after an authors retreat a few years before. At this event, Ludlow shared a potential plot idea that seems to have been replicated down to the smallest detail. Little does Ludlow know, it is not the CIA, per se, but Blackthorn Securities that has their eye on him and is responsible for the crash. Now it is up to Ludlow, with Margo by his side, to dodge Blackthorn as they zero-in on his location. What started as a fearful writer running for his life has become a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, with only one possible outcome. Fast-paced and with little time to synthesise the info, the reader is taken on this adventure as Goldberg tosses twists at every possible instance. Those who need a good beach read need look no further than Lee Goldbergs new series. This is my first time reading anything by Lee Goldberg, though it would seem he is well-established. He has a great ability to portray the ‘author writing about an author theme and not make it come across as corny, though does utilise the ‘cat and mouse thriller recipe well, injecting a little cheesiness when needed. Ian Ludlow (apparently Goldbergs nom de plume. is an interesting character, established in his writing capabilities yet always looking to stay relevant. His slightly geeky side mixes well with the fear of being caught by the giant bully and the story turns into his using some of the resources he has been able to cobble together as a writer over the years. The story progresses as he gains some courage, but the reader must also remember that some of the stereotypical ‘bad ass geek is on display here. Hokey at times, Ludlow does come across as somewhat enjoyable and I did find myself laughing while shaking my head on more than a single occasion. Margo French proves to be a nice counterbalance for Ludlow, as she has somehow been pulled into the middle of this adventure without wanting to be there. A dog-walker and amateur singer, French brings the sass and sarcasm to this party without becoming the helpless femme fatale. A handful of secondary characters flesh-out the wonders of this thriller novel, keeping the story edgy and propelling it towards what is sure to be a bloody conclusion. The story was by no means stellar, but it proved entertaining, which seems to be Goldbergs goal, as he has written much for television and knows how to keep the audience enthralled. Ill surely keep my eyes open for more of his work, though cannot rave about how wonderful I found the book or how it is likely some of the best reading I have done all year. Still, if you need something for a trip or lounging by the pool, Goldberg has just what you might want. Kudos, Mr. Goldberg, for an interesting introduction to the series. I admit, I am intrigued and will see what else you have to offer. Love/hate the review? An ever-growing collection of others appears at: A Book for All Seasons, a different sort of Book Challenge. Mar 10, 2018 Tulay Fun to read. If you're looking for real true fiction book, this isn't the one. Silly, somewhat eccentric story. Dog walker is his driver, successful writer is being driven around for book signing events. His terrorist scenario he wrote during the CIA event becomes real, and he's being hunted. Couldn't stop laughing in some parts. May 05, 2018 Kevin Ian Ludlow is hoping to work on his next thriller while on his book promotion tour. He sees an airliner crash down on the beaches of Hawaii and realizes he may have caused the event. Years before he wrote scenarios for the CIA showing creative methods terrorists could attack the US. Suddenly he realizes the two near death accidents he had are the CIA trying to kill him. I enjoyed the first half but I felt this one lost its way. Jun 24, 2018 Dee Arr it was amazing “True Fiction” was my introduction to author Lee Goldberg. I had never read any of his previous books (nor seen any of the television shows he had written) so I had no idea what to expect. My first reaction was that this book was an over-the-top, totally unbelievable story written by a new author (hadnt yet seen Mr. Goldbergs extensive bio) who had spent way too much time searching the Internet for conspiracy stories. As I continued to read, it dawned on me that the author had penned an “True Fiction” was my introduction to author Lee Goldberg. As I continued to read, it dawned on me that the author had penned an incredible story, a believable tale that sometime bordered on farce with a plot woven so tightly that I could do nothing but sit back and admire Mr. Goldbergs balancing act. The result is an adventure/thriller mix with twists and thrills that propel you from one chapter to the next. While the plot is a five-star element, the characters are just as interesting. Successful author Ian Ludlow is likeable (and Mr. Goldbergs excerpts of Ludlows writing – which demonstrate that Ludlow is a bit of a hack writer – are some of the most hilarious pieces of the book. Sidekicks Margo and Ronnie are active members of the story, providing much more than simple window dressing. While all the indications of a multi-book series are present, the book comes to a distinct and satisfying end. Bottom line: “True Fiction” is a conglomeration of spy thriller conspiracy and tongue-in-cheek imagination blended into a tightly written story that races from page to page. Mr. Goldberg pokes fun at both the publishing and movie/television industries and pulls it off with a “Who? Me? ” innocence that only adds to the books charm. Highly recommended. Five stars... On a book tour, Ian and his publishers escort Margo, run for their lives leading to Ian's realization that in order to survive, he must start thinking about what the Jason Bourne-like character he created for his current thriller series would do in his shoes! Not only an enjoyably smart thriller from the standpoint of plot development but the characters are engagingly witty while running for their lives from what they think is the real CIA with electronic surveillance, black helicopters, drones with hellfire missiles, assassination teams, and a fully functional war room all aimed squarely at Ian and Margo. The good news is it's book #1 in a new series... Mar 20, 2018 HJ A pleasant surprise. Nothing ground breaking, but very entertaining and with enough of a fast pace to keep the reader engaged, but not so fast that the reader struggles to keep up with the action. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book. The idea of this novel is fantastic and what I thought would be a different, but similar, book for #CJSReads. What I got was something completely different than I had anticipated. I am sincerely baffled on how I feel about this book. Is it satirical? Author Ian Ludlow's writing terrorism scenarios for the CIA start coming true. At least, he thought they were CIA. Ok, let me back pedal a little bit. I know authors do a lot of research for their writing, but this doesn't make them an expert, The idea of this novel is fantastic and what I thought would be a different, but similar, book for #CJSReads. I know authors do a lot of research for their writing, but this doesn't make them an expert, right? But I was intrigued that the CIA would find an author's point of view one they would take heed with for any potential terrorism that may happen. AHEM. (CIA or not, uh, what. But, putting plausibility aside, I was highly entertained and very amused. The read is fast, the plot is paced decently (though it does slow down towards the end a bit. What made me scratch my head a bit was the excerpts from his book thrown in and some gratuitous sex scenes that just kinda came out of nowhere. It may very well have to do with the fact that I just was reading a book that went even further with unnecessary sexual innuendos and scenes that made no sense that the scenes in this book just made that more of an impact. I really don't know. At least all the women had big boobs - even the blow up doll! HA! As something satirical, I can honestly say that this is entertaining - really just put aside what you might have actually been expecting and go with it. If you do that, this book is a lot of fun. I don't think it quite worked for me. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and Amazon Publishing for this copy in return for my honest review... Jun 11, 2019 gasus Recommended to gasus by: the positive review of Goodreads friend James Thane There's something beguiling about a novelist as the protagonist. Ludlow has gone on to forge a successful series of action novels featuring an undercover agent named Clint Striker, an undercover agent whose sexual prowess would put James Bond to shame. Who needs suave manners when you can put an enemy agent out of commission for three days due to the orgasm you can deliver? True Fiction opens with a horrific plane crash caused with disturbing enjoyment by a hired assassin lounging on Waikiki beach. He gains control of the plane's autopilot through his laptop and crashes it into one of the nearby luxury highrise hotels. At the same moment, Ludlow is being chaperoned around Seattle by a college dropout named Margo French, whom his publisher has hired for this leg of his speaking itinerary. This gig supplements French's main income source as a dog walker. Goldberg has the sense to resist the cliché or an Ian/Margo romantic entanglement, which heightens the much more interesting relationship of annoyance and dependency that connects them. Coincidentally, Ludlow has had two recent narrow brushes with death. Only after he learns of the plane crash is he beginning to connect the dots. Three years previously he participated in a private CIA-hosted brain storming session on imaginative terrorist scenarios. The plane crash scenario was his original contribution. This book was a lot of fun to read. Did particular scenes call to mind films like Enemy of the State, or the clandestine missions of Jason Bourne or Jack Ryan? Of course they did. That only added to my enjoyment of this book. The familiar territory stimulates a sense of both anticipation and surprise. At the same time, the wildly over-the-top villains and improbable twists kept up the fast-paced action. This was another worthwhile summer read... J. D. Mar 03, 2018 Paula Highly credible fiction Given the state of affairs in the world currently, there's not one concept in this book that I found unbelievable. It hurts to say that, frankly, because good fiction should be at least partially incredible. This IS good fiction, but all too credible. Well, except for the half man, half plant cop. Fast pace, likeable and detestable characters, an all-too-believable plot and viola! A great story. Mar 11, 2018 Jim A A pleasant mixture of action/adventure and tongue in cheek humor. This novel will bring many conspiracy theory followers to orgasm. It will also cause those who believe in the New World Order to nod their collective heads in agreement. Something for everybody in this one. Even a TV character who made his fame and fortune as a plant (vine) who was a cop. Some laugh out loud humor situations and scenarios. Mar 19, 2018 Jay Williams Another Great Story Goldberg is imaginative and a gifted story teller. The characters in this story are unique and wild. The entire story could be true because it is so realistic. Once you start reading you can't stop. The suspense is palpable, with occasional bursts of dark humor. Ian Ludlow is an everyman not a super hero, but his imagination and creativity make him a success. I want to read more about him. Mark Baker When terrorists take control of a plane leaving Hawaii and crash it into the island, the entire country is horrified. But none more so than thriller writer Ian Ludlow. You see, he had suggested just the twist on 9/11 that happened here to the CIA a few years back during a brainstorming session to help them come up with worst case scenarios. This book doesnt waste a minute throwing us into this thrill ride and never lets up until we reach the climax. I couldnt turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next, and the book manages to wink at a few clinches of the genre along the way. Ian and Margo were good characters, and another we meet along the way walks the fine line of being a caricature without being unbelievable. Since this is a thriller, there is a bit more language, violence, and sex than in the books I normally read. There is plenty of humor here to help ease the tension. I already cant wait for the sequel. Read my full review at Carstairs Considers... This is an enjoyable parody of spy thrillers with silly humor (Publicity Hound. a TV show about publicist who becomes a dog) lightening an actual spy thriller with a typical evil conspiracy. I got this because the author writes the Mr. Monk books; those are funnier. Mar 02, 2018 Jack Webb Chuckle-worthy Almost self-aggrandizing, this story of an author bailing himself out of trouble by acting like one of his characters is a lot of fun to read. May 31, 2018 Jen True Fiction lands on the light side of the crime/mystery/suspense scale. From the blurb: When a passenger jet crashes onto the beaches of Waikiki, bestselling thriller writer Ian Ludlow knows the horrific tragedy wasn't an accident. Years before, the CIA enlisted Ian to dream up terrorism scenarios to prepare the government for nightmares they couldn't imagine. Now one of those schemes has come true, and Ian is the only person alive who knows how it was who is behind the plot. That True Fiction lands on the light side of the crime/mystery/suspense scale. That makes him too dangerous to live. Comical and yet. I've often wondered, as I'm sure some of you have, if some fictional scenarios have not actually been translated to real life. The idea that the CIA or terrorists have taken ideas from fiction doesn't sound that far-fetched to me. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. Ok- It's a spy story, a conspiracy story and a comedy wrapped into one. It's nice to read heavy stuff but it's also nice to just be entertained and have fun. Apr 18, 2019 Glen A good parody from Goldberg, as a writer of spy fiction finds himself in the sight of the usual Blackwater type contractor outfit that wrecked a plane using his idea. The outfit fails to kill him over and over and begins to think he is an ace secret agent, although he is really just lucky. Humorous. Excellent theatrical spy espionage novel I loved this book. It kept me guessing, had a bit of conspiracy theories (which I love) intertwined, a bit of spy chase scenes and CIA assassins, and a bit of sarcastic character dialogue. All was well done by the author. Enjoyed reading this on vacation. Lee Goldberg's biggest strength for me is the ease in which he creates characters that the reader is immediately drawn to. This book is another great example, as Ian Ludlow is likable but with quite a few faults the reader will shake their head at. YouTube. True Fiction Watch. Some of the best new films and books live between genres S taff Sergeant Will James fiddles with the bomb like an IT tech on methamphetamine. He works quickly despite his seventy-pound bomb suit and, as he labors on one IED, discovers five more hidden nearby in the sandy dirt of an Iraqi road. Later, on another mission, he and his explosives team fail to find a way to separate a repentant suicide bomber from his timed explosives. James apologizes and leaves the anguished man alone in a town square. When the bombs do blow, they do not make the fiery tangerine typical of Hollywood explosions, but rather dusty, ugly clouds. As James struggles to make sense of and then disarm Iraqs many bombs, he regularly breaks protocol. He takes off his protective suit while working on one particularly puzzling IED because, he reasons, if he must die he “wants to die comfortable. ” He is a kind of cowboy artist of explosives, and has channeled all his gifts not into making a home rocket or getting a law degree but into defusing the bombs that would kill him. Instead of collecting old Macintosh computers, James keeps parts from bombs that he has disarmed in a box under his bed. Each of these scenes is tense and startlingly precise. They feel real. The Hurt Locker s forensic, formalist style aligns it with documentaries or biopics. But it is defined as a fictional action movie by its screenwriter, director, and studio. Yet The Hurt Locker is rooted in an original piece of nonfiction published in Playboy in 2005, by Mark Boal, titled “The Man in the Bomb Suit. ” It wasnt a piece that I had heard of, but when I got a copy of it, finally, it was a pretty terrific article, full of deep reporting. (As of this writing, Boals original isnt even archived on the Playboy Web site. Boal wrote the screenplay for the movie, too, and the correspondence is striking. Many of the details in the film—the predilections of the central bomb tech, for instance—are based on the bomb-squad guy with whom Boal had embedded. This seems to be part of a broader trend: an increase in the blurring of neat and certain categories of “fiction” and “nonfiction” into something that we might call “true fiction. ” Wherever I look, some of the best films and books are bending the categories in this way. There is Josh Neufelds A. D. New Orleans After the Deluge, a heavily reported graphic novel, out in August, with multiple stories of loss and recovery in that city. There is a new nonfiction book, Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers, which was heralded for its use of fictional techniques. In The New York Times, Timothy Egan described the middle third of the book as “an odyssey with the quality of an unpleasant dream” that “reminded me of Cormac McCarthys postapocalyptic fiction, with the added bonus of proper punctuation. ” Eggers defined his previous book, What Is the What, about the life of a real Sudanese “Lost Boy” named Valentino Achak Deng, “fiction, ” because he altered some of the facts. But it is equally grounded in reporting. All of these books and films—2008s Waltz With Bashir, about a soldier/directors memories of the invasion of Lebanon, is another—bring fictional techniques to nonfiction and nonfictions techniques to fiction, and are not clearly aligned with one genre or the other. There is even a new anthology just out, The Lost Origins of the Essay, that attempts to argue that some works long considered fiction are actually closer to this hybrid form. In his own contribution to the book, its anthologist, John DAgata, asks, “Do we read nonfiction in order to receive information, or do we read it to experience art? ” Such works belong to a category thatl iterary critics might call hybrid or even “liminal”—between things. The genre seems to thrive at transitional historical moments like ours. It is worth noting, too, that these hybrid works are arising outside of an avant-garde or “high” literature. I am talking about writers like blockbuster memoirist Jeannette Walls, who terms her new book, Half Broke Horses —the story of her grandmothers hard-luck life in a dirt dugout in west Texas—a “true life novel. ” Thinking about these distinctions brought me to the past of the nonfiction/fiction form, though not quite as far back as Daniel Defoe. I revisited Norman Mailers magisterial Armies of the Night and, even better, his The Executioners Song, a “true life novel” that is a thousand pages long and “takes for its incident and characters real events in the lives of real people, ” as Joan Didion put it. The book is based on heavy reporting on the crimes and 1977 execution of Gary Gilmore in Utah. We all know that Orwell or Capote or Mailer would create composites, compress time, put themselves in the action as a character—like the character “Mailer” in Armies of the Night —and yet imagined their work to be a certain kind of journalism. But in the last few years, writers seem to be backing away some from categorizing things as “true, ” even as they are also rethinking what nonfiction is and can be. Contemporary conditions may have something to do with this, including a reaction to exaggerated and falsified memoirs, like James Freys A Million Little Pieces. The wariness of the nonfiction label surely has something to do with Frey being unmasked by Oprah, and maybe all the subsequent memoirists whose veracity was questioned down to the smallest details have made writers more circumspect about the “nonfiction” appellation. (And then there was also Freys later abject and culturally demented half-redemption as a novelist. ) The rise in works of true fiction may also have something to do with the sense that the category “nonfiction” no longer has the frisson it once did or the assurance that a book or film will sell. “The newshole for narrative nonfiction is shrinking, ” says Andrew Pitzer, editor of Nieman Foundations Narrative Digest. “You have to have a lot of dazzle to get it published at all. Letting the work go over a little to fiction lets it be more salable. ” Now that almost anyone can write or film or blog or photograph their own life and reflect their own experience, journalists may feel the need to up the ante with fictional techniques, stirring up storylines and sharpening their works emotional truth with a light dose of creative license. (What good is reality, they might ask, now that “reality television” has made the word itself into a kind of fiction? One result, to me, is that the reportorial richness of nonfiction is turning up in places where it hasnt tended to thrive before—like The Wire and other television and film works, including The Hurt Locker, written in part by journalists who jumped the platform. They use composites and half-fabricated back stories; they give their subjects other names or refer to them by only their first names. The Hurt Locker s Boal wrote the script for another strong Iraq war film, too— In the Valley of Elah —based even more directly on another of his articles. For Hurt Locker, he told me in a phone conversation, “The milieu and the specifics of the job of being a bomb tech came out of my firsthand observation. There is no way I could have written that screenplay without having been to Baghdad and had a nuts-and-bolts view of how bomb techs do their job. This was not public information. There was no other source material to draw on in terms of research, and there really were guys in 2004 who behaved like the men in the movie. ” In fact, Boal shot amateur video in Iraq when he was writing his article for Playboy, and it got him thinking that the story would make a compelling film. When the time came to write the screenplay, Boals conception of character was shaped by detailed reporting. Its the same with A. D., the graphic novel, which portrays seven people from New Orleans who either stayed in the city during the flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 or fanned out to other cities around the country, eventually returning to the city in dribs and drabs. A. emerged from another hybrid form, reported comic strips, and first appeared on the Web site Smith. Its not the first book that has combined reportage with the graphic form. Joe Sacco helped pioneer the genre in the 1990s with his award-winning Palestine and Safe Area Goražde. And there is a host of excellent graphic memoirists, like Alison Bechdel and my friend Laurie Sandell, who wrote and illustrated The Impostors Daughter, about her con-man father. And dont forget Waltz with Bashir, the animated film which was adapted into a graphic novel this year. But A. is certainly one of the most rigorous in its storytelling and the most journalistic. Like Boal and Eggers, Neufeld is not “really” a journalist or “just” a journalist but something else: a nonfiction artist? A story architect? A. is “reality based, ” formed from Neufelds interviews with the people of New Orleans, like Abbas, a small-store owner who wound up on the roof during the deluge; Denise, who was in the Convention Center where people were dying; and a comic-book collector named Leo, who left in the nick of time, abandoning his 15, 000 books to drown at home. s panels are brightly colored, from yellow to green to red, seeming to emulate the mental states of the characters as they intensify their struggle to survive. According to a positive New York Times review, A. “is a novel, not a documentary: Mr. Neufeld edited parts of the survivors stories and combined some characters. ” Larry Smith, publisher of Smith, who originally commissioned the strips for his online magazine that ultimately became A. D., argues against the Times s reading, saying that the “categorization or description of A. as a ‘novel or somehow novelized is incorrect. ” In Smiths telling, A. is actually journalism in a new guise. “We worked really diligently and methodically to make sure we got everything right, ” Smith says. “I did the first interviews, in person, with Josh on our first trip to New Orleans. We recorded everything, and Josh double- and triple-checked his notes with the characters themselves before we put up a new chapter. A handful of times, a character would read the comic and say, ‘You know, I wouldnt have worn that type of sweatshirt; its not my style, so Josh made the adjustment when it came time to make the book. Neufeld has said that he used whatever method necessary to make “the emotional truth of the stories much clearer” and was going for a novelish feel. Of course, the survivors tales were edited, with additional characters removed from certain scenes when the scenes became too confusing. That alone could trouble its position as simply nonfiction. Still, in films like The Hurt Locker and books like A. and other reported graphic novels, we are seeing nonfiction freed from its rigid constraints. “I think its a journalistic sensibility, with a fictional aspect, ” Boal says. He cites Eggerss fictionalized nonfiction and journalistic fiction both as prime models. These may not always be purely “true, ” but they are some of the most emotionally accurate stuff out there. Its the mashup genre not just of the present, but also the future. Has America ever needed a media watchdog more than now? Help us by joining CJR today. Of the five shorts nominated by the Oscars, this was the best. A simple concept beautifully acted and shot.

Une soeur (2018. Une soeur anne. Une soeur c'est. "Une soeur" or "A Sister" is a Belgian French-language live action short film that premiered back in 2018 and was nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards almost 1.5 years later. The director is Delphine Girard, apparently still a relatively young filmmaker, and her effort here makes me curious about what we can expect from her once she makes the transition to full feature films. I got to watch all the five nominated live action short films last night before the Oscar ceremony and this one here was the first they showed and also my favorite from the bunch. At approximately 17 minutes, it as also the shortest from the nominees I believe, but the outcome here is a perfect example of how quantity does not equal quality because the other four are inferior, some even drastically. Shame this one probably never really had a chance to take home the prize. But that does not make it worse or anything. When and after watching, I still thought it was merely good, but after thinking a bit about it, I'd say it is even great and one of the finest short movies from its year and also deserving of the Oscar win. This partially has to do with lead actress Veerle Baetens here, who plays an emergency phone hotline operator. I already thought she was amazing on "The Broken Cicle Breakdown" wow... can't believe this one is already almost a decade old. so I recognized her immediately. This film reminded me of a Danish film from not too long ago that was also fairly close to being nominated for an Oscar, but that was a full feature film, so there were plot twwists and everything. This one here is just very focused and essential story-telling that almost feels a bit like a documentary from a police investigation. Fittingly, I read an article not too long ago about a case where a woman called such a hotline to report a case of domestic violence I think and that she (or somebody close to her) is in danger, but she could not speak freely, so she disguised her call as if she was calling to order a pizza. The hotline operator understood and realized it is not a prank and managed to help her to become hero of the day.
This film is at least slightly similar to that but it as made way before the event I just mentioned (became public) so it did not inspire this film. I think the moment you realize what's going on, namely when you find out that the hotline operator just received the call you saw before that from the perspective of the woman in the car, you are immediately in the middle of this film. And you won't leave until it is over. It is that good and had me on the edge of my seat more than most full feature movies. Of course, you will need subtitles unless you are fluent in French, but this should not keep you from watching. It is really essential that you understand all the dialogues. I also liked how they elaborated on what happened before that, probably that the woman was abused sexually and then abducted. You would not know how it ends, if there is a big car chase scene, the guy loses it and maybe kills his victim and/or himself or whatever else could happen, but Girard took the most likely and most realistic way out without any spectacular final sequence. Or I should say any spectacular showy sequence because the moment the police stops them, he gets out of the car and surrenders. Felt very authentic and realistic. So did everything else about the end, for example how she asks the woman on the phone if she is supposed to step out of the vehicle now as well. She trusted her to make the right decision for her the way she did before that by basically saving her. And at the very end, when Baetens' character asked for her name, we find out how anonymous this job really is and how you have to deliver acts that are much bigger than a simple "hello my name is. and still it stays a really lonely profession. The attention to detail in this film is nice too. Just one example how she steps away from the noise at her workplace when she is about to talk to the guy. She definitely is a pro knowing what needed to be done to do her best to save a life. There is no guarantee of course. Early on, there is also a brief moment of comedy when we find out about a guy who has been constantly calling for nothing that warrants calling. And finally, I would like to say that I think the title is a good choice as well. Very simple, but hits the nail right on the head. She is her sister that night, not only because of how she has to pretend she is, but also because the two women have a special connection. In the truest sense of the word. I highly recommend this film. Very well done.

Even though storyline-porn seems virtually extinct, Brit director Liselle Bailey has hit paydirt working for France's Marc Dorcel with her ongoing "whore" series of features. The keyword in French is "putain" but these hedonistic DVDs are more about nymphomania than sex for sale. Blonde international star Jessie Volt takes the title role, adequately though rather obviously (sound mix leaves a bit to be desired) dubbed into English to match the rest of the principal players in a shot-in- London opus. Minor storyline has her college chum Mia Malkova visiting from America (Chatsworth to be exact) to stay with Volt's family, which features in NonSex roles cheerful if clueless parents essayed by Dickie Slater and busty Sophie Monroe (latter, if IMDb has matched her up correctly, a mature fetish/bondage model. The brother of the title is played by Chad Rockwell, and is rather peripheral to the action. There's little drama, as the sibling antagonists are pretty chummy by film's end, with Volt even arranging to get her bro laid. While Malkova has her moments, befitting a big-name Hollywood Adult star, this is Volt's movie, showcasing her beauty and uninhibited talents. She gets to deliver several d. p. 's in a gang-bang featuring 3 of brother Chad's buddies, who would rather acquiesce to her nymphomania than watch TV. As usual, Bailey has imaginative stagings and achieves a useful balance between story set-ups, characterizations and the condom-laden hot sex that is Dorcel's bread and butter. I was disappointed at the skimpy credits omitting dozens of extras who appear in both a restaurant scene and a later party-orgy set-piece. Of these supporting players, only sexy Brit actress Alessa Savage gets the deserved recognition, mainly because, as we used to say quaintly when I was a youngster, she "goes all the way.

Rating: 3. 5/4 Have you ever watched Semi-Pro? The moment when Jackie Moon does the first dunk? The players stand and look agape, the referee fumbles his whistle, and when his feet land back onto the Earth, hes changed the game. Now, Semi-Pro is an irreverent and silly film, but I tend to think thats what happened when Kenny Sailors — basketball legend and inventor of the jumpshot — first fired off his elegantly formed shot. Kenny Sailors wasnt a braggart. Far from it. Hed rather talk about his marriage to the love of his life Marilyn, or his time in the Marines during World War II, or the womens high school basketball team who he coached to several state championships than talk about himself or that “silly” shot. Director Jacob Hamilton ‘s Jumpshot: The Kenny Sailors Story uncovers two facts thats long been apparent: Kenny Sailors invented the modern jumpshot and he was a singular and amazing man. Hamiltons documentary opens in 2011 in an empty gym. Theres an establishing shot of a basketball sitting idly on the floor. In walks an old man. He picks up the basketball, dribbles it off the floor, then bounces it off the floor for a basket. Thats Kenny Sailors, still gleefully outplaying people my age. Sailors, for the most part, is long forgotten. When Bobby Knight, Jerry Krause, Steph Curry, Dirk Nowitzski, Nancy Lieberman, Tim Legler, etc. are asked who invented the jumpshot, their faces squirm with the same puzzlement Sailors former opponents must have had 80 years ago. What follows is a journey from Laramie, Wyoming to Alaska to the annals of basketball lore. Hamilton, in his research for the film, uncovers some truly amazing archival footage — not just of basketball, but of Sailors life too. We see old photographs of Sailors, footage of his wife as a drum majorette, Laramie, Wyoming, his high school, and his games. And his games are incredible, especially his two David vs. Goliath moments: First, when his Wyoming team won the NCAA tournament, then when he beat back East Coast bias to defeat the NIT champions Saint Johns. Incredibly, Sailors played a different brand of basketball than anyone who had come before him. His brand began with the jumpshot, which he fashioned because he couldnt beat his taller brother Bud in one-on-ones. So like many other great discoveries and achievements, the jumpshot was born from sibling rivalry. But Sailors was more than his shot. He was an adept ball handler, possessed stop-on-a-dime speed and quickness, and was an adroit defender. When Hamilton uses footage from Sailors games, especially from the NCAA tournament, or the famous photo from Life Magazine of Sailors rising over his flat-footed foes, we get a sense of just how far ahead he was of everyone else. Seeing him play is like watching the guy who presented sliced bread for the first time, he just cuts so smooth. And when current and former NBA and WNBA players see a picture of Sailors jumpshot, its like theyve seen Santa Claus and the Eastern Bunny watching Jordan playing the Knicks at MSG. Theyre just in awe. But the most marvelous component of Hamiltons documentary is Kenny Sailors. Your documentary is only as good as your subject, and Hamilton has an incredible subject. Sailors is humble, aware, and just a hoot. His lust for life and energy rivals those half his age, and his sense of humor is as fluid as his playing. At one point, he jokes about suing the NBA for 5, 000 for the use of his jumshot. Much like Sailors must have been a player from a different era to his contemporaries, he feels like a man from a different time to us. Sailors isnt in the Hall of Fame. Hes not in the Naismith Hall of Fame because he went to Alaska for three and a half decades, because his wife had asthma and that was the best place for her. Hes not in because he spent his life coaching womens high school basketball rather than appearing on CBS as a commentator. Hes not in because he rarely brags about himself. But by not being in — as much as that will confound your brain — in some measure he proves how much more there is to life than accolades. Sailors should be in the Hall of Fame, but if you leave Hamiltons touching documentary with only that in mind then youve missed the point. And much like the players he whizzed past in his youth, youve also missed Kenny Sailors. An official selection of SXSW 2019.

[1] A 5-foot-10-inch (1. 78 m) guard, he is notable for popularizing the jump shot as an alternative to the two-handed, flat-footed set shot. [2] Sailors was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Bushnell, Nebraska [3] and grew up on a farm south of Hillsdale, Wyoming, where he developed his effective jump shot while playing against his 6-foot-4-inch (1. 93 m) older brother Barton (known as Bud. 4] He eventually brought his skills to the University of Wyoming, and in 1943 he led the Cowboys to the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Sailors was named the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player for his efforts. [5] He was the unanimous selection as College Basketball Player of the Year in 1943. [6] He would earn the honor again in 1946. Sailors was the only player in the history of Wyoming Cowboys basketball to be selected as an All-American three times, in 1942, 1943, and 1946. [6] From 1946 to 1951, Sailors played professionally in the BAA and NBA as a member of the Cleveland Rebels, Chicago Stags, Philadelphia Warriors, Providence Steamrollers, Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics, and Baltimore Bullets. He was second in the BAA in total assists in 1946–47, was named to the All-BAA 2nd team in 1948–49, and averaged a career high 17. 3 points per game in the 1949–50 season. [7] He scored 3, 480 points in his professional career. [8] Sailors was inducted into the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame on October 29, 1993. [6] In 2012, he was named to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. [9] John Christgau, author of the book The Origins of the Jump Shot, said that Sailors jump shot technique was the one that modern fans would recognize as the "jump shot. I would say that squared up toward the basket, body hanging straight, the cocked arm, the ball over the head, the knuckles at the hairline — that's today's classic jump shot. 4] In 2014, the University of Wyoming announced its plans to erect a specially-commissioned sculpture of Sailors outside of the University's basketball stadium, the Arena-Auditorium. [10] Sailors died on January 30, 2016, sixteen days after his 95th birthday, of complications from a heart attack he had in December 2015. Watch Stream Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors story. Behind the shot you know is the American story you'll never forget. Experience the inspiring all-American true story of Kenny Sailors, the developer of the modern-day jump shot in the global sport of basketball. From collegiate all American and NCAA national champion, to pro basketball star, Kenny faded into the Alaska wilderness to be forgotten by the sport he helped pioneer. Sixty-years later, he emerges through his most passionate supporters - Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Clark Kellogg, Bob Knight, Lou Carnesecca, Kiki Vandeweghe, Nancy Lieberman, Chip Engelland, Tim Legler, Fennis Dembo, David Goldberg and a host of other basketball and sport legends -in an effort to recognize Kenny in the Naismith Hall of Fame and tell the story of his impact on basketball, his country, and the people who knew him best. Now Playing Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors Story is not showing in any theaters in the area.

Kenny Sailors, his jump shot, and the Wyoming Cowboys proved they could beat anybody, anytime, anywhere in 1943. The story of the Pokes' inspiring run to the NCAA basketball championship at Madison Square Garden in the Big Apple actually begins in little Hillsdale, Wyo., during the Great Depression. When young Kenny and his older brother, Bud, weren't working on the family farm, they could be found shooting baskets with a leather ball at a rusted iron rim on a dirt court, usually through the teeth of a gusting wind. One spring afternoon in 1934, Kenny grew tired of Bud, who had sprouted to 6 feet 5 inches tall, swatting traditional set shots back in his face. So, the 13-year-old with springs for legs made a move that would revolutionize basketball. "The one thing I could do was jump. I could broad jump and high jump when I was just a punk kid. I had legs on me and I could get up. I won state here in Laramie with a broad jump of 22 feet as a senior. Sailors said, seven and a half decades later. "I thought, ‘that guy is big, and I'm not very big. But I can jump. “So I decided to run right at Bud and jump straight up. I leaped as high as I could and shot the ball over him. I don't remember if it was one-handed or two-handed, but I made one. And so the jump shot was invented—or at the very least perfected—by Sailors, literally on Wyoming soil. Hank Luisetti, an All-American at Stanford in the 1930s, garnered national attention with a unique one-handed shot, but he didn't leave the floor with both feet. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame suggests that Glenn Roberts may have been the first to shoot a jumper. Roberts, a Virginian, used a two-handed jump shot in the early- and mid-1930s while in high school and at Emory & Henry College. Joe Faulks is also considered to be one of the "fathers" of this shot, honing his skills with it as a kid in Kentucky before attending Murray State and then playing from 1946-1962 with the NBAs Philadelphia Warriors. But many credible basketball historians and legendary coaches from the era consider Sailors to be the first pure jump shooter. "I heard of Kenny Sailors. said Jim Brandenburg, Wyoming head coach from 1979-87, who was a schoolboy in San Antonio when the Cowboys were making national headlines in 1943. "Most of the high school coaches in Texas were still teaching the underhanded free throw or the two-handed push shot. We were just starting to develop the one-handed set shot, more the one-handed step shot and the step-back one-hander. ” "We knew about the jump shot, ” Brandenburg said, “but we didn't have any coaches that could really teach us step by step, so we could really get into it. We knew that Kenny was one of the guys credited for starting the jump shot. Coach Ev Shelton embraced Sailors' flashy game from the moment the talented 5-foot-10-inch freshman stepped on campus in Laramie. Shelton, a Naismith Hall of Fame head coach, and Sailors, a three-time All-American (1942, 1943, 1946) guard, guided Wyoming to a 31-2 record during the 1942-1943 season. That season for the Cowboys included NCAA tournament wins over Oklahoma (53-50) Texas (58-54) and finally, Georgetown (46-34) in the title game. Wyoming then played National Invitation Tournament champion St. John's at Madison Square Garden to prove once and for all who the best team in the country was. Wyoming prevailed 52-47 in overtime. Sailors still remembers the feeling of taking the floor in the "World's Most Famous Arena" as if those glory days happened last week. "Here I am, just a kid off the farm down there in Hillsdale, never been out of the state before, and only 19 years old. Sailors said of his first game at Madison Square Garden. "You can imagine the first time when I went in there. They announce your name when you go on the court, Kenny Sailors from Wyoming. “And the crowd, they're going nuts. I've never seen anything like it in my life. That's more people than I ever saw in a building in my life. Never even come close to it probably. After the NCAA Championship] we got back to the Laramie train station and the whole town was there, which was only about 8, 000 people. Sailors recalled. "We'd seen twice that at Madison Square Garden. Boy oh boy, it was kind of embarrassing because we couldn't go anywhere around Laramie. I went to go buy a necktie, and they gave it to me. I went to buy a meal and couldn't pay for it. When the cheering was over, Sailors and six of his teammates went off to fight in World War II. College basketball's 19-year-old national player of the year was already commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marines and was sent to the South Pacific not long after the team returned from New York City to Laramie. After two years of service, Sailors returned to the University of Wyoming, which due to the war had suspended the basketball program for the 1943-1944 season, to finish his collegiate career in 1945-1946. He played in the NBA, including a stint with the Denver Nuggets, before leaving basketball for an outdoor life with his beloved wife Marilynne. The Sailors owned the Heart Six Dude ranch in Jackson, Wyo., and then moved to Alaska where they worked as hunting guides for 33 years. When Marilynne passed away in 2002, Kenny moved back to Laramie. Well into his 90s, Sailors lived in an apartment just steps away from the University of Wyomings War Memorial Stadium and regularly attended Cowboys (and Cowgirls) basketball games, where he was treated like a rock star by the Arena-Auditorium fans. He suffered a heart attack in December 2015 and died Jan. 30, 2016. He was survived by his son, Dan, daughter-in-law, Jean, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. He was 95. Credit. Eric Schaal/Life Magazine, via University of Wyoming There was just one witness to the moment Kenny Sailors helped revolutionize the game of basketball — his brother, Bud — but by all accounts, no one has ever doubted their story. The moment came on a hot May day in 1934. The two were battling, one on one, under an iron rim nailed to the side of the familys windmill, a wood-shingled, big-bladed landmark that their neighbors on the Wyoming high plains recognized for miles around, the way sailors of the usual kind know a lighthouse from miles out at sea. Kenny, a 13-year-old spring-legged featherweight, was dribbling this way and that on the hardpan, trying to drive to the basket, when Bud began taunting him, as older brothers will. “Lets see if you can get a shot up over me, ” Bud said. A high school basketball standout, he had five years on his brother and, at the time, almost a foot in height. Kenny took the challenge, doing what people at a disadvantage often do: He improvised. He squared up, planted his feet and leapt. “I had to think of something, ” he said in an interview a lifetime later. What he thought of was the jump shot, a basketball innovation that would one day be seen as comparable to the forward pass in football. Sailors, who died at 95 on Saturday in Laramie, Wyo., would never say flat out that he had invented the shot on that day or any other. No one can say for sure who did. The early 20th century produced enough far-flung claimants to that distinction to fill out a starting five and warm a decent-size bench — players like Glenn Roberts, Bud Palmer, Mouse Gonzalez, Jumpin Joe Fulks, Hank Luisetti and Belus Van Smawley. But people of reliable authority have said that if they had to pick the one whose prototypical jump shot was the purest, whose mechanics set in motion a scoring technique that thrilled fans and helped transform a two-handed, flat-footed, essentially earthbound affair into the vertical game it is today — giving rise, quite literally, to marksmen like Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Rick Barry, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant — it would be Sailors. Overcoming Skepticism Sailors developed the shot in high school, perfected it in college as a three-time all-American and was one of the few players of his era to make a living off it in the professional ranks. He did so in the face of skeptics. The game back then was all about quick passing to find the open man and shooting from the chest, with two hands, feet on the floor. Watching Sailors play, a coach told him, “Youve got to get yourself a good two-hand set shot, ” and benched him. But Sailors, ever the freewheeler — one day he would guide hunters into the Alaskan wilderness — ignored the advice, to the delight of fans in Laramie, where, as the point guard, he led the University of Wyoming Cowboys on an improbable ride to their only N. C. A. championship, in 1943. Their run made the college powerhouses of the East and the big-city reporters who covered them sit up and take notice of Western basketball. If anyone can be said to have immortalized Sailors, it is the Life magazine photographer Eric Schaal. He was courtside at Madison Square Garden in January 1946 when, in a game between Wyoming and Long Island University, his camera caught Sailors airborne. In the picture, Sailors, in black high-tops, is suspended a full yard above the hardwood and at least that much over the outstretched hand of his hapless defender. The ball is cradled above his head, his elbow at 90 degrees, his right hand poised to fling the shot with a snap of the wrist that would have the ball spinning along a high arc toward the rim. The photograph, appearing in one of Americas most widely circulating magazines, made an impact from coast to coast. “A shot whose origins could be traced to isolated pockets across the country — from the North Woods to the Ozarks, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Pacific — was suddenly by virtue of one picture as widespread as the game itself, ” John Christgau wrote in his book “The Origins of the Jump Shot. ” “Everywhere, young players on basketball courts began jumping to shoot. ” As the books subtitle — “Eight Men Who Shook the World of Basketball” — acknowledges, the jump shot had many fathers, all within a few years of one another, suggesting that in the long evolution of the game, the shots time had ineluctably come. Each inventor had his own variation. Van Smawley, with his back to the basket, would corkscrew around to face the hoop before releasing the ball; Luisettis was a running one-hander. But Christgau picked Sailorss technique as the one modern fans would recognize. “I would say that squared up toward the basket, body hanging straight, the cocked arm, the ball over the head, the knuckles at the hairline — thats todays classic jump shot, ” Christgau said in an interview. “It was unblockable. ” That view was echoed by Jerry Krause, the research chairman of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. His own study, he told last year, led him to conclude that Sailors was the first player to develop and use the shot consistently. Basketball eminences have also given Sailors their vote. Joe Lapchick, a former pro basketball star and coach, wrote in 1965, “Sailors started the one-handed jumper, which is probably the shot of the present and the future. ” And Ray Meyer, the venerated former coach of DePaul University, assured Sailors in a handwritten letter, “You were the first I saw with the true jump shot as we know it today. ” A Humble Start Kenneth Lloyd Sailors was born on Jan. 14, 1921, in Bushnell, Neb. — population 124 — to Edward Sailors and the former Cora Belle Houtz. His mother had gone west in a covered wagon and grown up in a sod house. She gave birth to Kenny by herself. The boys parents divorced when they were young, and Kenny and Bud — Barton on his birth certificate — were reared by their mother on a 320-acre farm outside Hillsdale, a stockyard town in southeastern Wyoming. An older sister, Gladys, had married and left home. The boys helped keep the farm going through the Depression, driving to Cheyenne, the state capital, to sell potatoes, bantam sweet corn and chickens. One year they raised hogs, butchered them and sold the meat door to door from a trailer hitched to an old Chevrolet. As they headed for school in the morning, the boys would see their mother out in the fields, and when they came home in the afternoon, they would see her there still. The brothers historic game of one-on-one remained vivid in Kenny Sailorss memory. “The good Lord must have put in my mind that if Im going to get up over this big bum so I can shoot, Im going to have to jump, ” he said in an interview on NPR in 2008. “It probably wasnt pretty, but I got the shot off, and it went in. And boy, Bud says: ‘Youd better develop that. Thats going to be a good shot. So I started working on it. ” Bud was an all-stater, and when he received a basketball scholarship from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, his mother sold the farm, pulled Kenny out of high school and moved there, too, opening a boardinghouse. Kenny became a champion miler and long jumper and a basketball star at Laramie High School, building leg power that would eventually give him, by his measure, a 36-inch vertical lift — an invaluable asset for a 5-foot-10 point guard. The jump shot puzzled the Laramie coach, Floyd Foreman. “Whered you get that queer shot? ” Sailors recalled him asking. Sailors led the Laramie Plainsmen to a state championship and followed his brother to the University of Wyoming, also on a scholarship. (Early on he was a teammate of the future sports broadcaster Curt Gowdy. He soon had sportswriters groping to describe his jump shot. “A shot-put throw, ” one wrote. Chester Nelson, a sportswriter for The Rocky Mountain News in Colorado known as Red, wrote of Sailors in 1943: “His dribble is a sight to behold. He can leap with a mighty spring and get off that dazzling one-handed shot. Master Kenneth Sailors is one of the handiest hardwood artists ever to trod the boards. ” In the 1942-43 season, under Coach Everett Shelton, Sailors led the team to a 31-2 record and a championship, with a 46-34 victory over Georgetown at Madison Square Garden. He was chosen the N. tournaments most outstanding player. “His ability to dribble through and around any type of defense was uncanny, just as was his electrifying one-handed shot, ” The New York Times wrote. Wyoming was anointed the nations best college team after it defeated St. Johns University, the National Invitation Tournament champion, by 52-47 in overtime in a Red Cross fund-raising exhibition at the Garden on April 1, 1943. “The dynamic Ken Sailors, ” as The Times put it, led the way again. That year he married Marilynne Corbin, a cheerleader nicknamed Bokie, and then enlisted in the Marines and served in the South Pacific, where Bud was flying B-25 bombers. Discharged in 1945 with captains bars, Sailors, with a year of eligibility left, rejoined the Wyoming team midseason and led it to a 22-4 record, earning his third all-American honor and a contract with the Cleveland Rebels of the Basketball Association of America. Image Credit. University of Wyoming Belated Praise The jump shot was still alien to the pros, and the Rebels coach, Dutch Dehnert, was skeptical. “Youll never go in this league with that shot, ” he told Sailors before benching him. But Dehnert was soon gone in a coaching change, and Sailors, with his jump shot, returned to the lineup. Professional stardom eluded him, though. In three seasons in the B. and two in its successor, the National Basketball Association, Sailors played mostly on losing teams, like the Providence Steamrollers in Rhode Island (where he signed an endorsement deal with Bennetts Prune Juice, receiving all-you-can-drink cases of it as a bonus. He led the first incarnation of the Denver Nuggets in scoring one year and exploded for 37 points in a game with the Baltimore Bullets. He retired from professional basketball at 30. Sailors later bought a dude ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyo. A Republican, he served a term in the Wyoming Legislature and lost bids for the United States House of Representatives and the Senate. With their children grown, Sailors and his wife sold the ranch to his brother in 1965, packed up and drove to Alaska, living at first in an Airstream trailer. They stayed for more than 30 years, moving to a log cabin overlooking the Copper River and then to a Tlingit village on Admiralty Island. Sailors led hunting and fishing expeditions, coached youth basketball and taught high school history. After Marilynne Sailors developed Alzheimers disease, the couple moved to Idaho, following their daughter Linda, who had married. Sailorss wife died in 2002 after 59 years of marriage, and Linda Sailors Money died in 2012. Another daughter, Carie, died when she was 5. Sailorss death, in an assisted living center, was announced by the University of Wyoming. He is survived by a son, Dan, as well as eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. After his wifes death, Sailors moved back to Laramie and settled near the university as a living campus legend. Plans were afoot to erect a statue of him at the basketball arenas entrance. To the disappointment of his fans, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., never inducted him. But the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame did, in 2012, in a class that also included Patrick Ewing. Sailors joined Shelton, his coach at Wyoming, among the enshrined. Days afterward, Wyoming honored Sailors with a halftime ceremony during a game against Colorado. Overhead was a Gulliver-size Cowboys jersey hanging from the roof, its downy white trimmed in brown and gold and bearing Sailorss name and number, 4. It remains the only jersey suspended there, high above the court.

This story  originally aired on Feb. 20, 2016. This week it appears again as a part of our Origins Show.  Sure, the slam dunk is flashy — but three-pointers win games. And to sink a three-pointer, you have to know how to jump. No one knows who first came up with the idea of jumping in the air and shooting a basketball. But the modern jump shot, the one that's still used today — the one we teach to kids — does have an inventor. And that man is not in the basketball hall of fame. At least not yet. Why? To answer that question, we have to turn back the clock 84 years. Two Brothers On A Farm The year is 1932. The location: a family farm outside Hillsdale, Wyoming. The star of our story is Kenny Sailors. Hes 12. And he idolizes his older brother, Bud, the way 12-year-olds often do. And so when Bud starts playing basketball, Kenny wants to play, too. "And, of course, we didn't have any place to play except he'd put a hoop up. A rim and no net on it, and he fixed a backboard, and we fastened it to the old wooden windmill that we had. Bud and I'd go out there and play around. And I never could get a shot off, and he really enjoyed that because he was 6-foot-5, and I was just about, I don't know, 5-foot-7 probably. He'd laugh and he'd say, Kenny, this isn't the game for you. It's for big men. Tall men. It was out there on that packed ground and that old windmill that I figured out a way to get a shot off over that brother of mine. Dribble up to him. He couldn't stop my dribble, and I'd dribble up to him and then jump.  Boy that spooked him. He said, That's a good shot, Kenny. You have to get better at that. Kenny Sailors did get better at it. He got good enough to play for the University of Wyoming and good enough to take that team to the 1943 NCAA finals at Madison Square Garden. "People out East, had heard stories about this team from the West, and their superstar who played this kind of crazy game. says  Shawn Fury, author of " Rise and Fire. a book about the many men who've contributed to the jump shot. "They ended up winning the NCAA championship. And then a few days later, they played the winner of the NIT tournament, and they won that as well, so they were kinda the kings of college basketball. Theres an old highlight reel of that game on YouTube. Thing is, even though Kenny was named the College Basketball Player of the Year, he doesnt get a shout out on the highlight reel. A clean view of his jump shot doesnt even make the cut. Fury explains. "Forever in basketball history, both feet were always on the ground when they took a shot. They'd have the ball with two hands and at their chest and they'd shove it forward, kind of like shoving a boat off into the lake or something. So it makes sense that a sports announcer who has watched hundreds of games but just seen set shots had never seen anyone like Kenny. So he probably didn't have the words to describe it, so he's just going to kind of gloss it over. Jump For Don't  Announcers weren't the only ones confused by Sailors' shot. Defenders didn't know what to do either. "They would raise a hand to try to block the shot, but a lot of times they wouldn't jump. Fury says. "You know, that's hilarious. I say. "It seems so logical. He jumps, you jump. Yeah, to us, it sounds so simplistic and it sounds like something that James Naismith himself should've known in 1891. Fury says with a laugh. "But it just wasn't, because the game for 50, 60 years had been played one way. Kenny Sailors' first pro coach didn't want him to use the jump shot.  (AP) So lets talk about how basketball was played back in 1943. Kenny Sailors is not the only one on that old, grainy highlights film who jumps. Players on both sides jump for rebounds, they jump for layups. On another highlight reel you can even watch a guy dribble down the court, jump in the air and fling the ball at the basket. It goes in. So what made Kenny Sailors jump shot different? It looked different. says Jud Heathcote. "No one would shoot in somebody's face, as we call it, and he did. Heathcote would later go on to coach Magic Johnson and Michigan State to the NCAA championship. He says it's a crime that Sailors isn't in the Hall of Fame. But back in the 1940s, Heathcote was a college basketball player himself, and he saw Sailors and his jump shot at a tournament in Denver. "He would get right close, jump over them and release the ball. Heathcote recalls. "And so this was spectacular in terms of my observation. This is what Heathcote saw. Sailors would stop. (This is important because otherwise hed plow into the defender — that's a foul. So hed stop squared up to the basket, jump, and at the top of his jump hed release the ball with one hand — using the other hand just as a guide. If youre having trouble picturing it, think the Warriors' Stephen Curry. Its pretty much the shot thats made him — by some measures — the most dominant player in the NBA today. Got it? Now picture it in the 1940s. "So when I saw this little guy dribble right up into big guys, just jump and shoot right over them. Heathcote says, I was mesmerized with the jump shot. The jump shot took Kenny Sailors to the league that would become the NBA. But when he got there, he found out that not everyone was mesmerized. "This first coach I had from — Dutch Dehnert was his name. He had that New York brogue, you know.  That — nice old guy, but he just wasn't a coach. He said to me, Sailors, where'd youse — 'youse' — where'd youse get that leapin' one-hander. That's what they called it. Leapin' one-hander. 'Oh.  I said, I don't know, Dutch. I said, I've had that quite a while. I said, That's what keeps me in the game. He says, You just never make it in this league with that kind of a shot. He says, I'll show you how to shoot a good two-handed set shot. And he says, That dribble. He says, We don't dribble in this league. He said, We pass the ball up the court. Luckily, for both Kenny Sailors and the future success of the NBA, that coach was fired and replaced with a guy who put the ball in Sailors' hands and let him do what he wanted with it. And that worked out pretty well for Sailors and for the NBA. "I think it grew the popularity to a degree that it never would have otherwise. Fury says. "Increased scoring a lot, in college basketball especially. You know, you used to have games in the 40s or the 50s. Now you had games in the 80s and 90s. And fans just enjoyed that more. But what about Kenny Sailors? Kenny's story really has been a forgotten story. says filmmaker  Jacob Hamilton. "He disappeared for nearly 50 years after he retired from the game of basketball. Hamilton is directing a documentary  about Kenny Sailors' life, and he provided all of the interviews with Sailors that we're using for this story. But before he started working on his film, he had the same reaction to the story as I did. Wait, this guy invented the jump shot? How is that possible. And, The jump shot didn't always exist. The Jump Shot's Legacy A few years ago, Hamilton invited Sailors out for breakfast — Sailors ate ham and eggs — and they talked about the movie they wanted to make. Sailors mentioned his time in the Marines, his 15 years as a dude rancher in Jackson Hole, his 35 years in Alaska coaching high school girls basketball and his lifetime as a devout Christian. He seemed more interested in talking about those things than he was in talking about the jump shot. Cause he is very humble, he is very modest and he doesn't like to take credit for it. Hamilton says. "You just look at his life and like, Man, that's the way to do it. He didn't waste one second of his life. Kenny Sailors died on Jan. 30, 2016 — just two weeks after his 95th birthday. "You know, the thing that we feared most was that he would pass away and no one would know and he'd be forgotten, like he was before. Hamilton says. But Sailors hasn't been forgotten. Since his death in late January, the call to include him in the Naismith Hall of Fame has only gotten louder. It was always something that seemed to matter to Sailors' friends more than it mattered to him. He'd like to say that as a lifelong Christian, he didnt spend a lot of time worrying about such things. "You know, these halls of fame that you can get into down here that men select you to get into, they're nice up to a point. I know I belong to the greatest hall of fame that any man or woman can ever belong to. And when you belong to that and you know you belong to it, you don't worry about these halls of fame that men create down here. Don't mean that much to you. The Naismith Hall of Fame announced its 2016 class at the NCAA Final Four in April. Sailors was not among the honorees. The veteran's committee will continue to consider his case. And should his name eventually be called, Jacob Hamilton says he knows that his friend will be smiling down on the announcement.

If they had zero-summed the dwemer would have been gone in past present and future meaning they would have never existed in the first place thus all of their architecture machines and other leftovers would not be existant and noone would ever know they had existed because technically they did not in the first place due to zero summing.

"The Mandalorian" captures audiences with action, lore - The Feather Online Skip to content “The Mandalorian” captures audiences with action, lore Disney+ introduces new show to Star Wars franchise Disclaimer: This review of “The Mandalorian” talks about the events that take place in the show, and therefore contains spoilers. At this time, there are six episodes available on Disney. This review will cover the first episode for the majority, but will mention events that take place in other episodes that demonstrate common elements of the show. Leading up to Disney+s release on Nov. 12, Disney heavily advertised a new show titled “ The Mandalorian ”. Hype for this new show outshined that of other popular shows such as “ Game of Thrones ”, “ The Flash ”, “ Stranger Things ” and “ The Crown ”. After watching the first episode, I became hooked on “The Mandalorian” due to the elements of suspense, action, mystery, lore and more action. Mando (right) and Baby Yoda resemble a father-son relationship as the episodes progress. In the depicted image, Baby Yoda reaches for a lever while Mando takes no notice “The Mandalorian” takes place in the Star Wars canon timeline after the events of “ Return of the Jedi ”. At this point in time, the galaxy finds itself under the control of the new republic after they destroyed the empire. The area of republic influence fails to reach the outer rim of the galaxy at his time, leaving the area in a sea of lawlessness. The first episode begins with the protagonist, The Mandalorian (called “Mando” by most other characters in the show) tracking down a bounty, explicitly letting viewers know that he is a bounty hunter. Bounty hunters show up quite a few times in the Star Wars universe as anti-hero characters, working for both good and bad. After taking in his bounty, Mando returns to the planet Nevarro where the rest of the Mandalorians hide underground. There, Mando obtains his bounty from Bounty Hunter Guild contact, Greef Karg. Karg then tells Mando about a high risk, high reward bounty for Mando. Mando takes the offer and receives instruction to meet the client in an undisclosed location. The client is revealed to be an imperial officer that evidently escaped the fall of the empire. Accompanying him stand a number of stormtroopers, all present in this secret base. The officer explains that he needs a target brought to him dead or alive, and reveals the believed location of this target. After multiple setbacks to increase the suspense of the episode, Mando arrives at the compound where the target resides. After an intense blaster fight with the pirates who call this base home, the Mando reveals the target as a small creature that the internet named “ Baby Yoda ” because of its close resemblance to the famed movie character. Baby Yoda appears harmless enough, except to the frogs he occasionally swallows. Mando turns Baby Yoda over to the Imperial officer in episode three, but has a change of heart and rescues him later in the episode. Mando now must flee from the Bounty Hunters Guild because of this infraction. This concept of keeping Baby Yoda safe sets up all of the episodes to come. Chapter 6. Streaming Now. #TheMandalorian #DisneyPlus — The Mandalorian ( themandalorian) December 13, 2019 While establishing how Mando performs his work, the show displayed his combat skills as well. Mando uses a variety of different gadgets such as a blaster pistol, sniper rifle/taser staff, grappling hook and flamethrower. I appreciated the variety because it allows the show to insert situations into the storyline that Mando solves using these unique tools. Mando uses his wrist-mounted flamethrower on multiple occasions. His other wrist features a grappling hook. The Madalorian title in general contains links to extended lore within Star Wars. Mandalorians reference both people from the planet Mandalore and the way of life of Mandalores warriors. It is this way of life that the protagonist follows. As revealed in the first episode, he was taken in by the Mandalorians after he became an orphan. The Mandalorians conduct their business in secret and never remove their helmets in front of others. “The Mandalorian” contains many fight scenes and deaths within the sequences of action. As for the episodes out as of now, there exists no majorly gory scenes apart from a stormtrooper that fell victim to Mandos flamethrower. Most other accounts of death in the show are by blaster fire (lasers) and explosions. I have enjoyed watching this series so far because of the cinematography and lore appeal. As a Star Wars fan, I love the connections that the show makes with the movies. However, this may make fully understanding the show more difficult for viewers watching “The Mandalorian” as their first Star Wars experience. There exist a few things that I would critique about this show. First, the episodes sometimes show intervals where the storyline takes a while to develop. This leaves me frustrated because I become anxious awaiting the next development in the story. Another thing I think hinders the storytelling is Mandos armor. The armor, made of a metal called beskar, withstands almost any amount of damage without breaking. This allows Mando to be near indestructible, which might seem cool at the start, but becomes slightly dull when he never obtains so much as a scratch. “The Mandalorian” is available for streaming exclusively on Disney. Episodes are released every Friday and the last episode of season one releases on December 27. The second to last episode, however, releases on December 18, a Wednesday. Drama. Directors=Rob Reiner. year=1989. Spanning a long decade of inconclusive debates and logical arguments on the ever-present question of whether men and women can be just friends, the successful political consultant, Harry Burns, and the New York City journalist, Sally Albright, still haven't found the answer. Against the backdrop of a strictly platonic friendship peppered with intense love/hate moments, Harry and Sally stubbornly refuse to accept that they are the perfect match, even though they love to banter when they are not bickering. Now, after all this time, they still find themselves before this complex ongoing problem. Will the best friends stop denying the pure magnetism that prevailed ever since Harry met Sally?. . When Harry met Sally is a romantic comedy classic that many have tried to emulate since it came out. Not that they've succeeded. But this movie that's often imitated, never duplicated is flawless from start to finish. Meg Ryan who I'm not a major fan of is adorable as Sally, sadly though I think this role may have "typcast" her a little. Billy Crystal is wonderful, I enjoyed this so much and it's one movie that can be watched over and over and never loses it's magical flavor.
This is definitely up there as one of my favorite romantic comedies ever And it does something that is rare in these types of movies, it manages to be sweet, funny AND extremely deep with incredibly intelligent dialogue and unforgettable characters.
I love the theme of the movie, and that it is interesting and thought provoking while still being fun and humorous-it looks at male/female relationships-can men and women just be friends? I really am not sure, in real life, the movie would have had the ending it did but hey you never know. So many people love this movie and have made comments, I'm not even gonna go on. When Harry met sally is a high quality romantic comedy that is a 10 of 10 and a movie that ages like fine wine, it gets better every time it's watched.

Countries - Japan Writer - Reiko Yoshida year - 2019 264 vote director - Masaaki Yuasa. あーもうMステサイコーやったわ. It's so sad guys. Make me cry alone. T_T. 💖💖💖💖. Saw anime review intro smashed like. I just love this kind of Mvs. I love this lovely music video. Hinako is a surfer, Minato is a firefighter. Both about 20 and they fall in love. Everything is ridiculously perfect, but one day Minato drowns while trying to save someone from the ocean.
Hinako, understandably takes it pretty bad, but to her surprise, whenever she starts singing their favorite song, Minato's spirit appears in the closest body of water - be it a stream, the ocean, or a bottle of mineral water.
The whole story is really about Hinako, Minato's friends and family, and how they slowly but finally learn to "let go.
Of course, it's magical-realism, so in the end we get to witness some crazy action as well, where we surf down a skyscraper with our protagonists.
Unfortunately, this is not the most original story, the characters are a little two dimensional, and the filmmaking could've been a little braver.
It's fine though, the film looks really nice, colorful with constantly glowing orange hues and cool blues. The action looks fantastic as well and the environments feel very "lived in" and detailed. Seeing it on a big screen really adds to the experience.
It is also paced well, has some pretty funny moments, as well as a couple of quite moving ones.
Recommended if you manage to catch it screening somewhere, but not an essential viewing.
There.
Really not much else to say about it, but seeing the only other user review for this title is from someone who clearly has no idea what he's talking about, I wanted to add my two cents.

壱馬のラップで一気にRAMPAGEって感じがでてくる. Thank god the script writer avoids all the common cliche from a Japanese anime. It's a sincere and touching story, worth the time. Wow this movie looks emotional af reads comment section for 10 seconds well there's the plot summarized in one quote; don't need to watch it I guess. Kimi ha. Hmm i more like japanese song.
